Different types of wiper blades on display in an auto parts store

#1 Best overall: beam wiper blades

Top pick

A low, one-piece design that presses evenly on the glass and doesn't collect ice easily.

Key trade-off: clean and quiet, but cost more than basic blades.

#2 Best budget: conventional blades

A classic metal frame and the lowest price. Fine in mild weather.

Key trade-off: cheap, but ice can build up in the frame.

#3 Best for snow: winter wiper blades

A rubber cover protects the frame so snow and ice don't stop them from working.

Key trade-off: great in winter, but heavier and not needed in summer.

DIY: How to replace your wiper blades

Time: about 10 minutes · Tools: none · Difficulty: easy

  1. Find your sizes. Check your owner's manual or measure each old blade. The driver and passenger sides are often different.
  2. Protect your windshield. Lift the wiper arm away from the glass and lay a folded towel under it, in case the arm snaps back.
  3. Remove the old blade. Find the small clip where the blade meets the arm. Press the tab and slide the blade off the hook.
  4. Attach the new blade. Slide it onto the hook until you hear a click. Give it a gentle tug to make sure it's secure.
  5. Lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield, then repeat on the other side.
  6. Test it. Spray washer fluid and run the wipers. They should wipe clean with no streaks or squeaks.
